ImagineU: Will it work for me?

Imagination grows by exercise, and contrary to common belief,
is more powerful in the mature than in the young.
W. Somerset Maugham

Interested in ImagineU but not sure it's a good match for you? Here are some thoughts that may help you decide:

About the ImagineU Approach

ImagineU courses, workshops, and upcoming Friends Forums are geared towards intelligent, curious adults coming from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds. You don't need to have extensive experience in the disciplines and topics we're covering. Instead, if you're intrigued with the ideas and seeking a way to invest in yourself and challenge your imagination, you'll find this a place to explore safely.

All of our faculty are experienced in teaching adults, and are adult learners themselves. We have great respect for the particular joys and challenges that adult learners bring to their learning experiences. We believe that everyone joins in with the benefit of their own wisdom, experience, and expertise, and that we are here to engage, challenge, and support one another. We also recognize, that in this era of specialization, it takes a special courage for an adult to engage in a new learning experience, and most of us wrestle with self doubt, particularly when we're asked to be creative. It's a risky place to go, trying something new without being sure of all of the rules. But with those risks come great rewards: when you leap into the unknown, you can discover amazing things about yourself and the world around you.

We're chosen to build ImagineU online because we feel it's the best way that we can reach most people who are interested in imagination -- here, together, you can build a community without the boundaries of geography, and find creative and intellectual colleagues who are hungering for similar opportunities to enrich their lives.

About ImagineU Leaners

ImagineU learners come from a range of backgrounds, professions, and interests. Some have lots of higher education experience, and some have learned in their worlds and careers. They have come from all over the United States and Canada, and even from Europe. While diverse, they are all curious, looking for an experience that is both creatively and intellectually challenging while it is a warm place to try new thoughts on for size, share ideas, and take imaginal risks.

Some have taken our courses because they want to try something completely new, and some have jumped in because they want a structured opportunity to explore work that they're already engaged with. And most are trying online learning for the first time! (And we don't think any one has thrown their computer through the window, so it seems to be working...).

About Moodle: the ImagineU Learning Platform

After a great deal of research, the Imaginal Institute has chosen Moodle as its online learning system for ImagineU.

We wanted to be able to give learners more opportunities for engagement than simiply offering online courses via email, and we are really pleased with Moodle. It is a state of the art learning platform (getting better reviews than Blackboard, the most popular system that's being used by universities around the US), and offers students a wide variety of ways to access information and share ideas. It includes tools such as:

Even with al of these tools, Moodle is pretty easy to navigate. And, we're pleased and amused to note that the developers of Moodle have defined it as follows:

"The word Moodle was originally an acronum for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning environment, which is mostly useful to programmers and education theorists. It's also a verb that describes the process of lazily meandering through something, doing things as it occurs to you to do them, an enjoyable tinkering that often leads to insight and creativity. As such it applies both the way Moodle was developed, and to the way a student or teacher might approach studying or teaching an online course. Anyone who uses Moodler is a Moodler."

Meandering, yes, that's just our speed!
