Imagination Matters, Winter 2007

This was a course about creating work from natural forms. Participants collected natural materials from around their homes (leaves, seed pods, stones, bones, feathers, moss, etc) and interchanged them, so everyone was working with a collection of objects from New York, Massachusetts, California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Canada, and even Finland!

The Shadow Catcher/Tickler                                       Kim Vergil
"Have been working with the Concealing shadow, Revealing Shadow and have come up with:
I will try to catch it first and then Tickle it into Concealing and Revealing...  Lots of work yet to do... "

Tool?                                   Victoria Mowrer

"This is the piece that I created that is maybe not a tool – or maybe it is a tool??????  I was working with the 'what I know a lot about' and 'what do I keep hidden' concepts.  I think this piece covers both of those questions …"

"Feels like a character for me:
The sway of the walk,
the two heads kissing,
the left and right brain talking,
Grounded in? Stuck in?
Motion halted
movement caught,
arms bound,
heart reflecting (if that is a mirror).
Seed being born, pushed from the center of the being.
all while stuck in motion..." Kim Vergil

U: A Character                                                                                                           Kim Vergil

"Introducing:  “U: ”This person came to visit me in the studio from the box…As I worked he/she appeared…

Serious, silly, going somewhere and still, hung from a string in the studio gave a life of spinning all its own,  spooky, funny: A finger pointing saying “U” a prickly CARACKTER….. A hunter ready for the search…ONward “U”

The spiky figure:  about 1 ft tall, started with the idea of just attaching to a prickly branch from my ponds locus that I dried from the summer, lost the head but was left with this strange green prickly stick…started wiring things to it to make it easier I decided to hang the branch from the ceiling to hold it up and then this figure appeared and became more and more obvious to me anyway…it started to dance and swirl over the floor and but the actual character seem like a bit of an old hag really.  I had one stencil letter “U” in the package and somehow the figure got it.  She/he is pointing and saying “U”.  Very insistent and directing. Also He/She has the porcupine quill which seems to make them the hunter or is it a gathers Stick?  Good question? But the job will get done… But never forgetting to Dance along the way…Swirling and checking in all directions.

What a good exercise to describe He/She made me dig, question, wonder, come back to the conscious to formulate and put in words."

Scrying Mirror                           Victoria Mowrer

"And last but not least ...and the thing I am most excited about …is this 'scrying mirror with information sensors.' wth mica and bald cypress."
